WRITING: Update

Why, hello there. I know I know, I've been M.I.A. yet again. What's my excuse this time? Truth be told, I don't have one plausible enough to let me off the hook. As usual, I procrastinated more than I should have and thus neglected my blog and you my avid readers....that's if I still have any left, yikes.

It's been two months since my last post, imagine! To make up for my absenteeism, I'll let you in on a few things.  Get closer to your screens dear people. Boy oh boy, do I have gossip for you! I joke, I have none of that, lol. Yes, my not so humorous humour is back too. Although I like to think I do have my funny moments. Where's that smug little emoticon when you need it? Darn. Anyway, that smug little fella should have come right after my self praise.

Now for the updates.. Let's see, where shall I begin? Okay, I'll start with my summer holiday. Well, I went home like I said in my previous post. I also went to driving school, again. Although it's sad to say I don't feel entirely competent alone in a car. Ohhh, don't get me started about reversing! Ha ha, that's that ish I ain't with. I'm back at school and midterms are around the corner....ugh. I'm also yet to find a hobby that hopefully I won't tire of. By the way, my photography page has been inactive for a while now. I'm actually thinking of deleting it, Ill keep you posted.

Before I forget, who's watched The Fault In Our Stars? I absolutely love that movie. Funny thing is, I have a silly story related to it. I absolutely love Ed Sheeran and over summer I feel in love with All Of The Stars. You simply have to listen to it, it's beautiful. Anyway, it's part of the soundtrack to the movie and that got me feeling some type of way. You can imagine my excitement when I saw that the movie was showing on my flight. Gosh,  was quite the happy chappy. So there I was watching my movie and I just had to throw in the towel. Yes, I did not finish it. I was on the edge of tears.I simply could not burst out in tears in front of all those people. When I got back to school, I searched the Internet high and low until I finally found it. I watched it, in the comfort of my room and for some reason somebody seemed to be chopping onions nearby. Please tell me you got that. For those that didn't, I cried. Nonetheless, it's an awesome movie and I'd urge you all to watch it.

And speaking of Ed Sheeran, his new album is good too. I particularly like Afire Love, I see fire, Photograph, One and Tenerife Sea. Consider me his unknown and unpaid publicist. Get his album people! Or at least give it a listen. I'll post a list of the sound track below.

X Standard Edition

WRITING: The Motto

Hello there! I'm trying to be a little enthusiastic here. It's two-thirty in the morning and I'm up on my laptop. Man, I just felt like I had to write something. Actually, I've been thinking about this post for about a week now but I just didn't know how to put it together. Before I go any further, this isn't about Drake's song The Motto.

"Aspire to inspire than to be inspired"..... Brilliant quote, isn't it? I don't know what it is but I always feel like I have this bigger picture. It's crazy. I mean, I've felt this way for quite a  while now and the feeling just won't go away.

Whatever it is that I may do, I just hope it will be phenomenal. I always say I'm going to be quoted and I'll make sure it happens. That's just one of the many things I'd like to happen. Trust me, I do have some mighty big dreams. In all seriousness, where would we be without dreams?

"Those who dreamed, achieved,"  yet another brilliant quote. I don't know who said that but growing up it was printed on exercise books we'd use in school. Thinking back, I guess it was low key encouragement to hold on to your dreams.

Just think about, everybody's who's made a name for themselves. It definitely did not happen overnight. I wouldn't say I'm the best at giving a pep talk but just remember the motto- "Aspire to inspire than to be inspired."

"Don't give up. There are too many nay-sayers out there who will try to discourage you. Don't listen to them. The only one who can make you give up is yourself."

MUSIC: Blast From The Past

Lips Of An Angel - Hinder

Honey why you calling me so late?
It's kinda hard to talk right now.
Honey why are you crying? Is everything okay?
I gotta whisper 'cause I can't be too loud

Well, my girl's in the next room
Sometimes I wish she was you
I guess we never really moved on
It's really good to hear your voice saying my name
It sounds so sweet
Coming from the lips of an angel
Hearing those words it makes me weak

And I never wanna say goodbye
But girl you make it hard to be faithful
With the lips of an angel

It's funny that you're calling me tonight
And, yes, I've dreamt of you too
And does he know you're talking to me
Will it start a fight
No I don't think she has a clue

Well my girl's in the next room
Sometimes I wish she was you
I guess we never really moved on
It's really good to hear your voice saying my name
It sounds so sweet
Coming from the lips of an angel
Hearing those words it makes me weak

And I never wanna say goodbye
But girl you make it hard to be faithful
With the lips of an angel

It's really good to hear your voice saying my name
It sounds so sweet
Coming from the lips of an angel
Hearing those words it makes me weak

And I never wanna say goodbye
But girl you make it hard to be faithful
With the lips of an angel

And I never wanna say goodbye
But girl you make it hard to be faithful
With the lips of an angel

Honey why you calling me so late?

WRITING: The Bigger Picture

Have you ever wondered what your bigger picture is? Ever imagined where you be in five or maybe ten years’ time? I have but it’s not something I like to think about too often. Sadly enough for me, I got a reminder this morning whilst having a little chat on Facebook.
So, I was chatting with a friend who has this project going on. I'll put a link to it at the end of this post. So, he got asked to write a little about himself for a magazine and I got to read what he had to say. Here’s a little looksee of how our conversation went.

“Ayt, holla back at me a.s.a.p. Umm, it’s an article I was asked to do for some organization. The y picked me as a role model for 2014 because of the work I am doing with ‘I'm An African’ so they wanted me to write something.  I’m not much of a writer, more of the executor so had to talk to someone I know wouldn't let me down.”

“Lol. Right. That’s great though. Good for you!” -----Me

“Lol I guess so. Guess now life has meaning. Before I just used to wake up go around look at girls, lol, and create memories but life had no real meaning…now that I am heading towards my goals, everything makes sense…It’s like writing an exam question and the right answer finally comes out… Do you have the same feeling?”

*Long pause on my part*

“Lol. Wow. Sadly, I'm still yet to find the answer to the exam question. Right now I'm just taking life as each day comes. I wish there was something I could look forward to when I wake up. Alas, there is none.” -----Me

Yes, I did just use alas. For real though, I sometimes feel like there’s something greener on the other side. I'm yet to find out what it is. I must say, I am somewhat anxious. I'd love to have something of my own- something to call my baby…..not in the literal sense; that will come later :)

I’ll leave you with that and link to the ‘I’m An African’ project like I said before.

WRITING: Count Your Blessings

There's a Christian song that goes something like this, "Count your blessings one by one. Come and see what the Lord has  done." I've sang this song a few times without really understanding or should I say paying much attention to what I was actually singing. There are times I would feel so low and my mood will be down. Sometimes this may last a week or so.

However, something happened to me last night that made me entirely grateful to God.How many times do we ask God why? How many times do we forget about his mercies? I'm not going to act all holier than thou. No sir, I will not. All I'm saying is sometimes we need these wake up calls. Last night wasn't my first wake up call, neither will it be my last. I like to think that every now and then God presents us with situations just to realise how blessed we are.

One man's trash is another man's treasure, so they say. I once watched a short story on a poor boy who was constantly teased because of his tattered shoes and clothing. One day, after going through his usual routine of being tormented, he went to the park and looked down at his worn out shoes. Spotting a bench nearby, he went and sat down. Upon sitting down, he noticed the pair of shoes worn by the boy sitting right next to him. Oh, how he wished he had such shoes on his feet! Before he knew it, he was in the other boy's body and vice-versa. Looking down, he admires the new shoes on his feet. However, he tries to get up and to his dismay he can't stand up. Turns out the boy was paralysed from the waist down. As his nanny came to whisk him away from the bench in a wheelchair, he takes a look back and sees his former self running around gleefully.

I'll leave you with that little story. You could say it's something to chew on. I'll leave you to figure out the moral of the story by yourselves. Bless.

FICTION: Awkward

It's Tuesday and Jane already feels worn out. A few more days till Friday. Boy oh boy was she in need of some well deserved rest and relaxation. At least that's what she thought. The week hadn't been stressful but the semester was taking it's toll on her. Could it be the ever increasing summer heat? Or maybe it's fatigue as the academic year comes an end? Who knows? At this rate, she feels more than ready to throw in the towel. Oh! How she wish she could.

..........

Laying on her bed with nothing better to do, she recaps her day. Trying to think properly in the heat was quite a struggle but eventually events from the day begin to resurface. There was class and the awkward moment, or should she say moments, which made her leave class early.

..........

It's three o-clock and Jane has possibly the world's most boring class. Walking there with her friend, Angie, she sees Jeff. It had been a while since the actually ever spoke. Walking, she watches him chat up a female. As each second passes, they seem to get closer to each other. "Play it cool", she says to herself. Eventually, they finally come face to face. In his casual manner he greets both her and Angie, gives them hugs and leaves a fresh scent as he walks into class. "It could have been worse", she thought to herself. You see, Jane was what you would call "awkward". I suppose it's no wonder she could relate to Jenna from the MTV series, Awkward.

..........

Sitting in class, Jane and Angie chat their way through an ongoing presentation. "Can he cancel the next to hours of class", she whispers to her friend. It's bad enough the class was always a bore but what was worse was that she had it for three straight hours. The horror! Not too sure about what exactly is going on, she looks up to find that the lecturer's back at the front and boring the class away. Angie, who only came to watch the presentation left early. "Lucky her," thought Jane. She and Angie didn't take the class together. Guess she was on her own now. One hour down, two more to go.

..........

"Break time," someone says under his breath during class. "Break time," he says it again. Soon enough, a chorus of male voices say the same thing to. Looks like Mr. Lecturer got the hint and gave the class a ten minute break. "Hallelujah! Finally, I can get out of here." There was no way she was spending any more time in that class. She'd had one awkward moment already. She didn't need anymore. Quickly she gets her book bag and rushes out of class. "Shoot!" Just when Jane thought she wouldn't have anymore cringe worthy experiences, she meets the a bunch of girls who immediately give her a sense of unease. It's been two years and she still hasn't come to like this particular group of girls. She's had a few encounters with them and at some point been in the same circles as them.

..........

Doing what she does best, Jane walks past them with hardly a glance. Lord knows how much courage it took her to do that. She's never really know what exactly it is between her and these girls. After all, she hardly ever was in the social scene or what ever. Oddly enough, Jane somehow managed to attract a few guys here and there. Was it her awkward demeanour that charmed them? What ever it was, it seemed to work ever semester. Oh well, to each their own. "Weird bunch of girls," she said to herself. At least the feeling was mutual and neither party talked to the other. Unwritten code as she calls it.

..........

Walking back home, she uses the longest possible route. "Sure it's a little longer and sunny but at least I'll be alone with my thoughts," Jane thinks as she walks back under the glaring sun. At last, she get home. No sooner than she opens her front door, she's tossing her bag to the side and in a blink of an eye flops on the bed.

..........

Sighing deeply, she slowly falls asleep with the next day on her mind-"I'll deal with it tomorrow."

WRITING: Crooked Smile

PERFECTLY IMPERFECT?
"Say cheese!"
"Hey! Let's take a picture?"
"Poniso, join our picture."
"Let's have family pictures taken."

Four phrases heard almost every day. Funny enough, many aren't filled with dread upon hearing these words. For people like myself, the utterance of these phrases brings about an uneasiness. Let's go back to 2004 to when my story begins.

A fifth grader with a mouth full of one too many baby teeth. My story begins with a "lump" growing right above my upper-left canine. Not too long after, the same happens on the right side of my mouth. That, my friends, was the start of my photo phobia.

Fast forward a few years later, my teeth are now fully developed and I have two misplaced canines and two misaligned incisors. Talk about a blow to my self esteem. Sometime in 2012, I got my first set of braces. I had those on for about three months. Basically, they were more or less like retainers in the sense that they weren't permanent and had to be removed when eating and brushing. Nevertheless, I was delighted with the development- I was one step closer to "fixing" myself. Shortly, I went to get another pair which I had on for about six to nine months. Again, I didn't mind having to wear them because my journey to perfect teeth had just begun.

My nightmare begun after having snapped one of wires in my braces. My visit to the orthodontist revealed to me that my journey to dental perfection had just begun. Turns out I needed yet another set seeing as the ones I had on already had done their job and were no longer needed. After a consultation, I came back to have my braces taken out a few days later. There I was, back to square one. Would my nightmare end?

Of late I have taken the more positive approach. Hard as it may be, I try to look passed my flaws. Trust me, it easy to look at yourself in the mirror and see something that you so  badly want to fix but can't seem to at the moment. But hey, let's just call it my trademark ;) I think the bigger picture here is first me embracing myself. I think only then will I find satisfaction.

"You keep falling victim cause you're insecure. And when I tell you that you're beautiful you can't be sure"

FEATURED POST: Everything Comes At A Cost

I once tried my luck at fictional writing. Boy oh boy, didn't I rack my brain that day. I came up with a decent story, so I think. Okay, it was fairly decent. I must say, I got a few good reviews but I don't think it's something I'll do too often. Anyway, today I'll share with you a really good post I read. I thought to myself it was to good to read and not share. So brace yourselves for the writings of Chipo B.

Before we get into that, I want to say this is an awesome story. If you want to read more of her work, you can check her blog THE CHRONICLES OF EVERY WOMAN; http://chroniclesofeverywoman.wordpress.com/.

 Everything Comes At A Cost

The shopping bags hit the floor the moment Cynthia entered the door.
She kicked off her Jimmy Choo’s and sighed with relief as she felt the blood rush back to her toes.
“Beauty knows no pain, my foot!” she grumbled as she bent over to pick up the load of shopping bags. She paid no mind to the weight of the load as she semi-limped to her bedroom. She threw the bags onto her bed and fell next to them. She felt her body cry out in delight as she hit the plush, silk covers that covered her king-size bed. She sighed as she allowed her body to rest. Shopping was no menial activity. She shook her head. It was work – hard work. She willed herself to get up before she dozed off – she couldn’t afford to fall asleep. She entered her bathroom and stopped to admire it. It had just been renovated and she loved it. The ebony and ivory theme she’d chosen looked much better in reality compared to the picture – and the picture looked amazing. She made a mental note to send Steve another “message of gratitude”. She smirked. It paid to have a close connection in the architecture industry. Especially a connection who was able to get a renowned interior designer to offer her services – free of charge. If it weren’t for Steve, she probably wouldn’t have found the amazing penthouse she was able to call her home.
Steve… she wondered. It really did pay off to have such a close connection.
She walked over to the favorite part of the bathroom – the large black and white pearl bowl in the center of the room that was her bathtub. She turned the gold taps and let the water run as she returned to the bedroom. She jumped onto the bed and reached for her handbag – Original Louis V of course. She smiled at her bag.
“Nothing less than the best!”
She pulled out several purses. She emptied each one and examined her phones. She picked up theiPhone and quickly typed a sweet message of gratitude to Steve. She added that they should meet up for drinks sometime soon. She chuckled. She doubted that his wife would approve. She rolled her eyes. These church-going, pretentious wives were all the same. She chose not to dwell on her thoughts. She paused to look at her newly-manicured nails. What a day it had been, she thought.
Her vibrating HTC reminded her that her day was far from over. She looked at the number on the screen – Tito. She slid her finger across the phone’s screen and answered the call.
“My sparkling gem,” he greeted. The sound of his gravelly voice made her smile.
“My big boss man,” she spoke like a lovesick teenager – she knew that was what he wanted to hear.
“Did you enjoy the outing today?” he asked.
“Yes I did,” she upped the pitch in her voice as she dragged her voice a little bit. Vulnerable. She needed to sound vulnerable.
“Thank you for spoiling me,” she simpered.
“Do you like what you got?” he asked. He was beyond chuffed. It was in his voice. She looked at the mountain of shopping bags.
“Yes I do,” she cooed. “I love every single thing!”
She could barely remember half the things she’d pulled off of the racks.
“I’m sorry I couldn’t drop you off myself,” he said, sounding guilty. “I had to…”
“I know,” she replied calmly. “Your wife needed you.”
“You understand right?” he asked. She rolled her eyes. Men always sound so tough until their weaknesses are exposed, she thought.
“Of course I understand, honey,” she said. She listened to him sigh with relief. “But I hope you haven’t called to cancel on me.”
“Of course not, angel!” he was very quick to assure her. He sounded so desperate; it was rather pathetic. Tito was a very successful man. But there he was begging for her approval. She wasn’t even his wife. But he sounded like he couldn’t afford to lose her. He wasn’t the first man to need her so much. She found it fascinating. The power she had over these men.
“Good,” she said. “Now I need to go and get pretty for you. I’ll see you later, honey.”
“Okay, angel,” he said. “I’ll see you later.”
She ended the call and put her phone aside. She looked around the room. Nothing – from the Persian carpets on the floor to the Egyptian silk bed sheets she had – in the room was anything less than premium quality. Her life revolved around opulence – a lavish home, designer clothes, gourmet dining – the list was endless.
She remembered the days when she was a little girl. Her answer to every “What do you want to be when you grow up?” was “A Princess.” And she was a princess – to some extent. She was beautiful. She had her own castle. She had beautiful clothes. She had everything she wanted – two luxury cars, technology galore, enough accessories to supply a chain of stores…
She had everything.
She jumped off of the bed. The tub! She rushed to the bathroom but sighed with relief as she saw that the tub hadn’t overflowed. She removed her clothes and slid into the welcoming hot water. Her body shuddered as the heat worked on her muscles.
She thought of Tito. He was new to her. Well a new “client”. A new source of provision. She sighed. Everything came at a cost.
Women in her area – mainly uppity housewives – looked at her from afar and gave her the widest berth they could possibly give. She knew the names they called her.
“Prostitute.”
“Upperclass whore.”
“First Class Hussie.”
“Prime-time gold-digger.”
She smiled bitterly. Everything came at a cost. Yes, her lifestyle had been funded by wealthy – usually married – men. Yes, she gave them sex in exchange – but only when they required it. She knew what she was. Her “ways” were her own.
It all started when she was working as a PA for an esteemed CEO of a large insurance firm. They had an affair. He showered her with gifts and money in exchange for a listening ear. That’s all. Yes, they were intimate but all he ever wanted was what he never received from his wife – care. His wife was so into her life as a wealthy man’s wife, she neglected her husbands needs. Ironic. That’s how Cynthia got the job. His wife didn’t have time to keep his life in order, so she hired Cynthia to do that for her.
Cynthia’s natural ability to empathize and listen well made her hit it off with her boss. They became firm friends fast. His wife paid no mind. As long as her husband was happy, she was happy.
It was no surprise to both Cynthia and her boss when they ended up in a lover’s clinch one warm, summery night. That was their first moment. During their two year-long relationship, Cynthia knew that her boss would not leave his wife. She didn’t want him to leave his wife. She didn’t love him and she knew that he didn’t love her. He loved the attention and affection she gave him. The same affection and attention he craved to receive from his wife. The gifts and all of the money weren’t bribes. He never had to beg her to keep quiet. Confidentiality was an unspoken agreement. When they parted ways, he gave her a kiss on the forehead and said,
“Thank you for letting me see you as my wife. Thank you for filling the void she’s been failing to fill.”
That’s how it was with all of her “clients”. She was their temporary wife. Whatever they lacked in their marriage – they came to her. In return, they gave her gifts. They gave her money. They contributed to her life as a princess. Her family never asked questions – there were barely any family members to ask questions. Her father passed away when she was twelve – alcohol poisoning. Her mother lived with her younger sister in a quiet suburb in another city. Cynthia had demanded the house as payment from one of her “clients”. She sent them money every month. They asked no questions. She told no lies.
The men she’d helped saw her beauty first and they’d come to her to distract themselves from their failing marriages. But once they’d talked to her, their needs for her developed into something more emotional. Something more sincere. She smiled as she thought of how each man’s  ”tough guy” act would drop once she got to their core. Once she figured out what it was that was making them come to her. Everything she owned was a result of her hard work. She gave men compensation for the damage they received at the hands of their wives.
Their wives thought that as long as their husbands physical needs were met and they, the wives, still looked young and fabulous – then everything was fine. How wrong they were.
She thought of the anguished confessions she’d heard from “her” men. Their cries for attention. She’d seen their tears. She’d held them and rubbed their backs as they hurt and healed. She saw herself as an unorthodox therapist for men. She laughed when she thought of the judgmental housewives. They were busy mocking her but it’d only be a matter of time before their husbands were at her door, begging for her services.
She drained the water in the tub as she got out. She wrapped herself in a fluffy towel. Everything she’d sheen and heard pained her. It made her want to love her future husband so much in any and every way possible.
She winced at that forbidden thought. Everything came at a cost. What sensible man would accept her past? He wouldn’t see her as a ‘therapist’. He’d see her the same way the housewives did – as a money loving whore.
He wouldn’t laud her. He wouldn’t pat her on the back for “helping” all of those men. She sighed. Not every princess got her heart’s desire.
There were some clients that had fallen in love with her. They tried to propose to her but she’d turned them down firmly. She would not break a marriage. She sometimes regretted saying no, though. She sighed.
She looked at her reflection in the mirror. Her heart did long for love too. For someone to call her own. She shook her head vigorously. She erased all ridiculous thoughts and looked at the bags on the bed. She’d bought a number of dresses. She’d wear one of them on her date with Tito.
Everything came at a cost.
This princess had to keep the ball rolling in her life – regardless of the cost.

WRITING: Surge

Today I wrote my Statistics exam and it was horrible. I have a little countdown going on. I've written two papers so far and I now have four more to go. After that, holiday! God, I'm in need of a break. As I was saying, Statistics. In a bad as my exam was, I surprisingly felt unusually happy. It's odd, no one comes out of a tough exam with uplifted spirits. That was the case with me today.

Boy, you should have seen me. It's like I had this sudden surge of energy. On top of that, I was super friendly. I was greeting strangers and smiling quite a lot. Honestly, I really don't know what prompted that. I even went on a walk with a friend of mine. We talked and it was good. Surprisingly, we talked on a level different from the one we're normally on. I remember asking him a few questions and the conversation went on well. Very smooth to be exact. Normally I tend to mind my own business and chat only on surface level.

I'm still a little confused. I thought I'd share this experience with you. Did I like it? Yes, yes I did. I felt good. I felt light. I felt happy. I got to take a breather. The weather was pretty mild with a slight chilly winter breze. Maybe this is the universe's way of cheering me up. It knows that if I'd have given myself a hard time because of Stats. Oh well. Whatever the reason, I liked it.

WRITING: Then and Now

"New year, new me". It's almost that time of the year again. Yes, 31/12/13 is the day will see the annual cycle repeat itself. Social networks will be filled with status updates of people changing in the year2014. Resolutions, as the call them. I have nothing against new year's resolutions though. It's just funny because it's always the same old story. I graduated from high school two years ago. Looking back, it's been two years since I wore that high school graduation gown. What does that mean? I've had two years since the me of 2011 graduated from high school.

Have I achieved any of my resolutions in the past two years? Honestly, I don't know. I've never really  been one to focus on that anyway. What exactly is the point of this post? Well, it's me saying you don't need resolutions to be a better you. You don't have to plaster your social media with the changes people will expect to see from you in the new year. I like to think change is inevitable and there's definitely no way you can stop it. Thing is, if you're meant to change you will. When you do, believe me it will be noticed. Don't forget, change can either be good or bad. That's up to you. In as much as we can't resist change, you can choose the path you want to walk on-hypothetically speaking. I think you catch my drift.

Basically, I don't believe the whole "then and now" hype. The only difference is that you get older and possibly wiser but it's still the same person underneath. To sum it up, simply LIVE life. You don't need to refer to a piece of paper to see how far you've come along the way. I know it's early, but you have yourselves a blessed 2014.

WRITING: The Resurrection.

Hello there. It's me again, back with yet another blog. So, my previous "blogging" career took somewhat of a break. Pretty much it was due to the fact that I experienced writer's block one too many times. Hopefully, I'll have better luck with this one. I kind of have this feeling that my creative juices are flowing. I hope I don't run out.

So, 'The Resurrection' is pretty much my return to blogging. My new blog-A to Z- is more or less about anything that goes on around me or happenings in my day-to-day life. I thought the name was convenient enough because A to Z are the letters of the alphabet and we do write with them after all, so it gives me room to pretty much talk about anything I see fit. I could talk about mashed potatoes and gravy for all I care, I joke :) Although I must say, I do feel quite optimistic this time around. Blogging might just become something I'll do more frequently. Despite the fact that I'm back at school now and will probably have tonnes of work to do, I think I could squeeze in a few posts here and there. I hope I still have my audience. If I remember correctly, I had my fair share of followers. Okay, a handful :) Hopefully, with this new blog it will get to two handfuls; a little optimism didn't kill nobody.

I guess that's about it for now. Until my next blog post, it's adios from me.

Bless
